Antimicrobial supply from pharmacies

The UK Health Security Agency has published the 2024/25 English Surveillance Programme for Antimicrobial Utilisation and Resistance (ESPAUR) report, including new data on antibiotics supplied through Pharmacy First. From April 2024 to March 2025, over 2.3 million consultations were delivered; 97% of these were face to face, and up to 55% did not result in the supply of an antimicrobial. Urinary tract infection was the most common pathway, with no significant change in nitrofurantoin resistance. Pharmacy First accounted for just 4% of the majority of antibiotics prescribed in primary care in 2024.
