Building a resilient and equitable UK stem cell supply
Haematopoietic stem cell (HSC) transplantation is a life-saving treatment for patients with blood cancers, blood disorders and some auto-immune conditions. The UK has internationally recognised clinical expertise in this field and has played a leading role in innovation in treatment and donor provision. Evidence gathered indicates that many aspects of the UK’s system for supplying HSC is no longer resilient, sustainable or equitable. The report argues that the UK could become increasingly reliant on importing HSC, creating cost pressures and risks to long-term supply. It concludes that strengthening the UK’s ability to operate within a global HSC ecosystem is essential to improving patient outcomes.
