E-coli advice issued amid rise in cases

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) and partner agencies are investigating an outbreak of Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC) following a rise in cases. While the source of this outbreak is currently unknown, clinicians should be aware of the recommendations regarding sampling and when to refer. Approximately 10% of STEC cases develop haemolytic uraemic syndrome (HUS). The risk of HUS is highest in children under five years of age. It should be noted that antibiotics are to be avoided in suspected STEC or HUS cases. General guidance on managing acute diarrhoea is available via the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence or consult your local infection control team for advice. Information for patients can be found on NHS.uk for those with symptoms and when to seek medical advice. Click here for more.
