GP prescribing for chronic heart failure could expand
GPs could prescribe a wider range of treatments for chronic heart failure according to recommendations in the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence draft guideline on diagnosis and management of the disease. For both sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitors and angiotensin receptor neprilysin inhibitors, the draft guideline now says these can be started by GPs, with advice from a heart failure specialist, rather than solely by a heart failure specialist. The draft recommendation has the potential to speed up access to these treatments. Consultation on the new draft guideline is open until 8 July 2025.
