Making sound primary care commissioning decisions
As integrated care boards transition to become strategic commissioners, there is a need to focus on all commissioning decisions, including those relating to primary care. The potential for primary care to deliver more, and support the shift to community is significant, but understanding of the starting position, what is already commissioned, and population need is required as a starting point. For eye health, there is the opportunity to move services to the community, starting with an eye health needs assessment to support commissioning decisions through improved services for patients and potential cost savings. Likewise dental commissioning decisions should be underpinned by an oral health needs assessment. For primary medical care, have your historic locally commissioned services (LES, APMS etc) been reviewed? Do you know what is in place and outcomes delivered?
