Medical workforce education and practice
This report presents findings from the General Medical Council’s analysis of trends in the number, demographics, and place of primary medical qualification of doctors holding a licence to practise in the UK. It explores key issues across the UK workforce, including the potential impact of changing patterns in the number of doctors joining and leaving the register; and in applications and offers for postgraduate training posts. It highlights shifting dynamics within the profession, including a focused look at the history of female doctors in the workforce, following the number of women surpassing men on the medical register for the first time in 2024; and a significant change in the number of doctors declaring a disability since 2021.
