National medical examiner system

The government has announced its commitment to start the statutory medical examiner system to provide independent scrutiny of all non-coronial deaths and a point of contact for bereaved people to raise concerns. Relevant primary legislation will be commenced by autumn 2023 to prepare for this, and by April 2024 we expect all relevant deaths to be scrutinised. All healthcare providers including GPs should continue to work with medical examiner offices to establish processes by this time and we ask that integrated care boards review progress in their area and facilitate implementation.
