NICE to assess new dementia treatments
The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) has methods and processes for evaluating new treatments for use in the NHS for the new class of Alzheimer’s drugs, but key issues need to be considered. Treatments have begun to emerge including DMDTs (disease-modifying dementia treatments). These aim to alter the course of disease progression and reduce its substantial impact. While there are currently no licensed DMDTs in the UK, several are at varying stages of development and regulatory approval. Two of these, lecanemab, made by Eisai and Biogen and donanemab (made by Eli Lilly and Company), are scheduled to be appraised by NICE next year.
