OpenSAFELY expanded beyond Covid remit

NHS England has written to GP practices informing them that Directions to enable the expansion of the OpenSAFELY research platform for non-Covid-19 purposes have been issued. Under the Directions, NHS England has issued a new Data Provision Notice (DPN) to those using TPP or Optum, (formerly EMIS), IT systems, requiring them to make pseudonymised data available to the OpenSAFELY platform. The Directions are supported by a specification, developed in consultation with the BMA and RCGP, and with their full support for practices to proceed, incorporating safeguards on how the data can and cannot be used. These safeguards are also described in the data processing notice issued to practices.
