Reviews for patients with known allergies
A recent Prevention of Future Deaths report has highlighted the importance of ensuring patients with known allergies have regular reviews to check they know what to do in the event of a reaction and to check the expiry date of their adrenaline auto-injector. For the GP practice involved, they subsequently started to send automatic text messages to patients with a known allergy who hadn’t ordered an adrenaline auto-injector in over 12 months to check expiry dates.

Use of adrenaline auto injectors can carry additional risks when transitioning from child to adult use. NHS England’s updated Specialist Allergy Service Specification strengthens the requirement of providers of specialist allergy services to support the transition of patients from child to adult services. This includes holding joint annual review meetings with patients and family / carers.
