Supporting research delivery in primary care
Research is being delivered in primary care, which gives patients and the public access to research closer to home, allowing more people to get involved. This supports the NHS’ ambition to embed research locally and improve equitable access. Following changes to the Additional Roles Reimbursement Scheme (ARRS) from April 2026, primary care networks (PCNs) are now able to recruit any other direct patient care, or non-direct patient care roles as agreed with the commissioner. PCNs therefore have the flexibility to use the ARRS scheme to appoint research delivery roles (e.g. a research nurse), which will help to build capacity to deliver clinical research in primary care.
